I really loved Jaren’s post on boosting reading skills. I have always had a passion for reading (yeah, I’ve been called a bookworm once or twice) and reading about how my fellow bloggers are relating this to the online world is just exciting for me.
In addition to what Jaren has already talked about, I’d like to touch on a few more points about reading, which can help us extract pertinent information that we need to make our blogs better.
There are actually three “styles†of reading, each for a specific purpose. They are scanning, skimming, and detailed reading. Jaren talked about skimming (used to get the gist of something) already so let’s focus on scanning and detailed reading.
Scanning is used for a specific focus. That is, you merely run your eyes through the text to see if it will be useful for you. I find this style extremely useful as there is just so much information online that we cannot read it all even if we were to live forever. As such, the first thing that I do is to scan articles and first determine if there are relevant phrases or words for me. If not, then I move on to the next one. If yes, then I read the article in more detail – I either skim the article (for the gist) or I employ the next style.
Detailed reading – used for getting specific and accurate information. This does not need much of an explanation – you read every word of the text to make sure that you get the important points in detail.
Happy reading!
